A Seed Is Planted

It started with an invite to attend a ward evening fireside for empty nester couples.  The title was Serving a Senior Couple Mission.  We were empty nesters and quickly approaching the age for retirement, the perfect candidates. We had been saving for years and the thought sounded fun to me, but I knew this needed to be a joint decision.

The meeting was not high pressure, just a game and some presentations by ward members who had already served.  The idea of a mission sounded exciting, but in my mind I was thinking we were about two years from making the leap.  As I approached the dessert table, the bishop happened to be there.  I jokingly said, “Well bishop, sign us up!”.  His response was, “Well why not?”  That response caught me off guard.  I said, “I’ll have to talk to Joan and take a serious look at a potential plan.”

When Joan found out that I had implied we would serve a mission, she was not happy.  Choosing to serve is no small decision.  Fortunately, after evaluating all the requirements, it was apparent we could go if we had the desire.  It did not take too long and we began the process of filling our our online application.
