The Firth of Forth is an estuary, or firth, of several Scottish rivers including the River Fourth. It meets the North Sea with the Kingdom of Fife on the north coast and Lothian (Edinburgh) on the south.
On June 17, 2023, we purchased ferry tickets on the Maid of the Fourth to Inchcolm (an island in the Firth of Fourth).
The ferry leaves from a peer just to the south of a railroad bridge built in the 1960’s and is still functional today. The ferry sails under the bridge and heads east underneath the bridge.
The trip to Inchcolm Island was very enjoyable and only takes about 30 minutes to sail one way..
The picture above shows the island during our approach. Clearly visible is Inchcolm Abbey which is believed to have been erected in the 12th century. The abbey is also referenced in Shakespear’s Macbeth.
Our group of missionary “Day Trippers” pause for a quick photo with Inchcolm Abbey in the background. We spent about two hours on the island.
Of course, when we were done we were hungry. We ate at this little restaurant and enjoyed Fish and Chips, Mac and Cheese, and our first bites of hagis. It was a wonderful experience.
